Paige is currently in her first year of the Learning in Communities programme at the University of Edinburgh and joined the hub team to gain insight into how the hub operates, what a typical day involves, and to support the planning and delivery of activities. As her internship comes to an end in May, we asked her a few questions about her experience.
What you drew you to Rock Trust?
I am currently a first year on the Leaning in Communities programme at Edinburgh University, I chose The Rock Trust as it came highly recommended by my lecturers as a warm, welcoming and truly excellent placement which also aligned most with what I want to do in the future.
What did you get up to during your placement?
During my time at the Rock Trust I have been given the opportunity to engage with young people through activities such as the gardening groups, fresh start and the music groups on a regular basis and on one off activities like the day trip to the zoo. In addition to this, I have been able to see a lot of the background work that goes into these activities, which has been really interesting getting to experience all the planning and seeing the formation of new partnerships. Another thing The Rock Trust has given me the opportunity to do is talk to members of other teams and get to learn about their jobs, allowing me to see just how important every team is in the success of The Rock Trust and really feel included throughout my time here.
What did you learn during your time at Rock Trust?
Given that I am lucky enough to have The Rock Trust as my first placement, I have learnt so much that will really shape me as a practitioner going forward. The main things I have learnt however is that it is important to focus on the future but also equally, if not more important to focus on what you can do in the here and now as a practitioner. Also, to meet young people where they are at, and that you can’t do everything for everyone.
What was your favourite part of the internship?
I think my favourite part of my placement has been getting to learn from those in the hub, especially Marion who has just been such an amazing supervisor, passing all of her experience as a practitioner in a very comprehensible way that allow me to learn everyday without feeling overwhelmed. The most rewarding part that I have found was hearing from the young people the impact the hub has had and hoping that through this placement I can have a similar impact in the future.
