Live and Work in Westlothian: Two Years On

A new start for young people in West Lothian

In June 2023, Rock Trust launched the Live and Work project in West Lothian, transforming an unused building into safe, shared accommodation for young people affected by homelessness.

Through the project, Rock Trust provides three of the most crucial supports to prevent youth homelessness:

• High quality and affordable housing
• One-to-one support
• Guidance to access fair employment opportunities

Since its launch, the project has been home to 18 young people in West Lothian. So far, 11 have successfully moved on to the next stage of their lives, thanks to the support they received.

“Since moving into my own flat, I regularly meet up with my old flatmates, and we all agree that it feels weird to think we bonded over being homeless which I think is quite nice in a way.” Anna, 23

What makes the Live and Work model different

Live and Work offers more than just housing. It provides a safe and nurturing environment where young people can thrive. By removing the common barriers to education and employment, the project helps residents move towards long-term stability.

Project workers offer consistent, compassionate support, helping young people navigate the challenges of homelessness and rebuild their lives with confidence.

“I have been in loads of different homeless units. It’s hard wherever you go because you just want your own place, but this (Live and Work) is the safest place I have been. In the last place I stayed, the staff lied to us, there was drugs, there was rapes, I didn’t even feel safe going into the kitchen so I just didn’t, which didn’t help me because I couldn’t eat. You just didn’t feel that the staff cared, but here is different. I walked into the kitchen today and you guys (project worker and other young person) were here, and I just felt like I could join in the chat like a wee family” Rachael, 19

Leeanne’s story: from homelessness to home ownership

Leeanne was one of the first young people to move into Live and Work back in June 2023. Since then, she has thrived both professionally and personally, managing to secure a mortgage and buy her own property.

When Leeanne turned 16, she began working at a chain restaurant. However, her parents were far from supportive of her having a job and wouldn’t let her back into the house after late shifts. Leanne didn’t want to give up her job and rely on benefits, so she often found herself wandering the streets until the morning.

“Live and Work was a lot of fun, it was hard living with other people at times but looking back, I think I really enjoyed the chaos that came with it. I have made friends for life. It was helpful having a project worker, because there was never a time when I felt alone, and I could always turn to them to rant or talk or bounce problems off and I always felt listened to. I didn’t think I would be where I am now, I feel like I am living the life.” Leeane, 18

After moving into Live and Work, Leanne quickly made friends and set her sights on advancing her career and saving money. Living at Rock Trust’s Live and Work made it possible for her to sustain her job, she could come and go as she pleased, and her commute was just a 20-minute walk. She was ready to make the most of the opportunity she had been given.

In April 2024, Leanne was promoted to a management position at the restaurant, and by August, she and her boyfriend were approved for a mortgage on a flat.
