Shirley presented to Rock Trust in 2014, when she was facing imminent homelessness and needed support

Estranged from her family since she was young, Shirley’s only links to her family were with her Aunties, whom she sees very sporadically.

Previous experience staying in emergency bed and breakfast and hostel accommodation had exasperated Shirley’s anxiety problems and she was struggling to manage her finances and pay rent for her privately rented flat.

Rock Trust placed Shirley in one of our shared flats and supported her to build her confidence and self esteem, think about what she’d like to achieve in life, set her own goals, budget her income and learn the life skills needed to live on her own. After some time, Shirley managed to secure her own accommodation in Edinburgh.

Shirley wanted to plan for her future and, with the help of the Rock Trust, she secured a place on the “Get Started in Media” course, run in partnership with Screen Education Edinburgh and the Princes’ Trust. On this course, she developed the skills she had learned at university and produced a short video. This experience gave Shirley the confidence to peruse a career in Media.

Shirley is now returning to university to undertake evening courses and she successfully manages her tenancy whilst continuing with her studies.
