A Burns Night to Savour!
Attending a traditional Scottish Burns night should appear highly on everyone's life 'to do' list.
If you haven't yet had the pleasure, we have just the perfect opportunity for you. The Junior Chamber International (Edinburgh branch) have kindly come on board to support our work in 2012. To start the year they will be hosting a Burns night on the 28th January 2012 at the wonderfully atmospheric Dynamic Earth centre in Edinburgh. The night promises to be a real treat - with great food, a champagne reception, dancing (with music from Whisky Kiss) and of course odes from the great bard himself.
All proceeds from this event will be donated to The Rock Trust. Tickets are still available, so why not come on board and have fun whilst supporting a really good cause!

The Rock Trust
WHAT WE DO
The Rock Trust is a charity that works in Edinburgh and West Lothian with homeless and socially excluded young people between the ages of 16 and 25 years. The Trust’s aim is to provide opportunities for young people to develop the personal, social and practical skills, as well as the sense of self worth necessary for independent adult life.
We do this by providing supported accommodation in a mixture of shared and single flats, including specific provision for young mothers and babies, move on support to those moving to their own home, volunteer befriending services for young homeless people and through The Underground: a drop-in, healthy living centre to help improve the health of young people who are primarily homeless or in temporary and unsettled accommodation.
Accommodation, support, education and employment are the best routes out of the streets and the misery that accompanies homelessness; they lead to a better future for our young people. These are the solutions The Rock Trust offers a growing number of homeless youngsters.
HISTORY
The Trust was established in 1991 from a group of churches in Edinburgh who wished to do something practical for young homeless people. It was set up as a charity seeking to alleviate the homelessness problem in Scotland while at the same time raising awareness of the issue.
Edinburgh Council Launches New Fostering Campaign
Have you ever thought about taking a more direct route towards supporting vulnerable young people? If so you may be interested in Edinburgh Council's current drive to recruit new Foster Carers. There really is a great need for suitable people to step into this role, so if you are interested, further details can be found at www.edinburgh.gov.uk/fostering
The Council will be holding an information evening on the 1st December 2011 at their offices on Waverly Court, Edinburgh.
Climb Every Mountain!
2012 is a big year for The Rock Trust - a real coming of age as we celebrate our 21st birthday. As part of the years celebrations we thought that it would be great to do something really memorable - a real challenge which would leave the Trust with a lasting legacy for the next 20 years.
Scotland is a land of mountains and the biggest and best of them are the Munro's. For the unenlightened, a Munro is a Scottish mountain over 3,000 feet tall (of which there are 283!).
Our challenge for next year is to get a Rock Trust individual/group up to the top of each peak on the same weekend of the year. This will be run as a sponsored challenge and we hope to use the proceeds to do something memorable - like purchase a new flat that will provide a home and a future to many young people in the years ahead.
It promises to be a truly amazing event, but in order to make it happen we need a big, big team of committed individuals and groups who are prepared to get their boots out, brush down their plus 4's and head to the hills. We have nearly 30 individuals/groups already signed up...but we NEED YOU and your contacts.
Board Members Wanted!
We are currently seeking individuals to join our Board of Directors. We are particularly interested in hearing from any individual with experience and skills in the fields of Property Management, Law, HR and Marketing. For further information please see our Volunteering Opportunities section
Your West Lothian Nightstop Service NEEDS YOU!
The Rock Trust is currently in the process of establishing a Nightstop service in the West Lothian area. This is a very simple, but so effective service which really can make a massive difference to the lives of young people who are approaching a housing crisis.
Basically volunteer 'hosts' provide a bed in their own house for a few days - allowing time for professional support workers to work with the young person to find a solution(s) to their current problems.
We have been running the service now for a number of years in Edinburgh and it has proved such a success for both young people - assisting many to avoid the plunge into homelessness. Likewise, we know that volunteer hosts have gained so much from the experience as well. Find out more about the opportunity in West Lothian.
